From May 7 to 9, Model Senate returned for a sixth year, welcoming 110 post-secondary students from across Canada to simulate the process of passing a bill through the upper chamber. Organized by SENgage, the event saw students draft, debate, amend, vote on and passing a bill, and they learnt from senators throughout the process. We spoke with both participating students and senators about the experience.

After an “out of control” spike in temporary residents, the Carney government says Canada’s immigration system is back under control. But Jason Kenney, Canada’s longest-serving immigration minister, says what was once a model system is still far from fixed — and now is not the time to raise immigration levels again. This week on Open Question, Kenney joins CPAC’s Marc-André Cossette to examine the failures of Canada’s immigration system, why business groups pushing for more workers shouldn’t be driving the debate, what went wrong with the temporary foreign worker program, and why giving provinces more power over immigration would be risky. Kenney also warns that Canada’s once broad consensus in favour of immigration can’t be taken for granted, and that failing to restore public trust could have irreversible consequences.

Justice Rosalie Silberman Abella is awarded the 2026 Symons Medal by the Confederation Centre of the Arts for exceptional contribution to Canadian life. Following the medal presentation, Justice Abella delivers the Symons Medal lecture and then sits down for a conversattion with journalist Steve Paikin and 2020 Symons Medal recipient Bon Rae.
